Make Business Cards for Your Dream Job Find Your Dream Job

Make Business Cards for Your Dream Job Find Your Dream JobMake Business Cards for Your Dream Job - Find Your Dream JobBusiness cards are not just for corporate professionals. In fact, business cards are an excellent networking tool for job seekers in all industries. Whether you are at a job fair, a career networking event or an informational interview, giving a contact your business card is a great way for him or her to follow up with you and to learn a bit more about your professional identity. For todays task, you will develop and reservierung business cards designed specifically for your job search. What to Include in a Business Card Be sure to include your basic contact information your full name, phone number, and email address. If you are currently employed, include your job title and company name. Now that you have developed a presence on LinkedIn and Twitter, you should also include your LinkedIn URL and Twitter handle. If you have a business-oriented personal website o r an online portfolio, include links to those sites as well. If you chose to print a two-sided business card, you can include your branding statement or a brief list of your skills and/or experiences. Including your branding statement is especially useful if you do not currently have a job, but want your contacts to know about your work experience. You can also include a QR code, which can be scanned by a smartphone and is linked to a website URL such as your personal website so the viewer can easily get more information on you. Keep It Simple Be sure not to include so much information on your card that the reader becomes overwhelmed or loses interest. Be sure to give just enough information on your card to demonstrate your qualifications. You want quite a bit of white space left on your business card. Where and How to Print Your Business Card While you can print your own business cards on your printer, definitely consider professional printing (unless your printer has comme rcial printing capabilities). There are a number of ways to print professional cards at a reasonable price. For example, Vistaprint offers hundreds of one-sided cards for under $10. Smart Levels offers two-sided cards for under $25 before shipping. Staples and Office Depot also print business cards at a reasonable price. Make sure to carefully check the shipping options before purchasing, because shipping can be expensive. Once you have received your business cards, you will be ready to network with anyone, anytime

Your Interview Was Final, Until It Wasnt

Your Interview Was Final, Until It Wasnt Your Interview Was Final, Until It Wasnt INBOX: “I was supposed to have a 3rd and final interview today. But after telling me this morning the interview time changed to later in the day, they emailed and ended up canceling the entire process. The recruiter didn’t supply much information besides they are moving on to another candidate. Should I just leave it as is or ask the recruiter for more info?” The reality of job search is that it’s not always as smooth as we would like it to be. The changes, delays, and runaround are all frustrating, particularly in the absence of substantive information. Let’s walk though some simple strategies for when your interview process gets convoluted or comes to a halt altogether, so that you have the tools to land the opportunity you deserve in a reasonable time frame. It's Not Personal. It's Business. Mindset matters. On the one hand, your goal is to build rapport and be engaging with the interviewer, so that you can begin to cultivate a relationship. Execute that approach, but avoid falling into the trap of becoming too emotionally invested. They may say the like you. They may say you’re great. They may say you’re perfect. But regardless of how friendly things seem to get, you're not forming a new friendship here. In your mind, keep things at arm’s length until they extend and offer and you accept it. Professionalism Is Paramount. You can tell over the phone when a person is smiling, right? That’s what I want you to do over the computer. Make sure every email communication with the interviewer is upbeat, with a positive tone, and free of complaints. This is not to say that when they change the interview day or time more than once that you have to jump up immediately to accommodate them. They don’t get to dictate, necessarily. You have the right to say, “I’m very interested in continuing the discussion, but I have another meeting at that time. May I suggest Thursday at 10 instead?” Saying this is a professional thing to do, and it helps you take back some control so you’re not victim to their every whim. Fire Up Those Irons. You’re not going to be slave to one convoluted interview process once you know how to regularly position yourself for multiple interviews with multiple employers simultaneously. Make it a best practice in your job search to directly reach a decision maker regarding every opportunity. Just submitting an application online gives you a 1-2% chance of success at most. But making direct contact skyrockets that figure to 40-70%. Making direct contact is not just about spamming your network to ask if anyone knows of any opportunity that might be good for you. This is a strategy to use with precision. Tell a decision maker what your brand is, your areas of expertise, and your specific interest in his organization. “Specific” is important. It’s a little bit like a 1st date: you can’t just say you’re interested because the person is nice. The 2nd date happens because you dug a little deeper than that. Every direct contact takes more time than just clicking “apply” and “submit.” However, every direct contact takes you further faster â€" that’s how you’ll end up in the quite enviable position of juggling multiple interviews simultaneously. If one process stalls or ends, you already have other irons on the fire. There’s a free masterclass, “How to Land Your Ideal Role in 8 Weeks or Less” featuring a candidate who just started a Director-level position. I demonstrate the process he used to land more than a dozen interviews. He was able even able to turn down several employers and focus in on the handful he really wanted. Learn how to do the exact same thing in “How to Land Your Ideal Role in 8 Weeks or Less.”

She has also designed her own five step guide to designing and writing a PPP Resume. The resume is similar to the USAJOBS resume, but it has distinct differences. Probably the most notable is that it is written and formatted for a human being, not for the USAJOBS Resume Builder. There are other important differences as well, so if you’re using PPP, you need to make sure you know exactly what you are doing. Ms. Troutman is the Federal Resume Writing Workshop Leader for the BRAC Center in Crystal City, VA. The BRAC Center provides assistance to BRAC-impacted workers in Arlington County, VA. The Resume Place, Inc., gives free estimates for Priority Placement Program Federal Resumes. The Federal Resume Guidebook, 5th Edition includes a chapter on writing the PPP Federal Resume for your information.

This is the best way to detect lack of integrity in others

This is the best way to detect lack of integrity in others This is the best way to detect lack of integrity in others Integrity is a word that we hear almost every day but we seldom take the time to think about it. Integrity is similar to ethics, honesty, and trustworthiness- they are a moral code of values that affect our behavior. Integrity is about doing the right thing in every situation, whether it’s convenient or not.The world is so competitive that some people will lie, cheat, and bribe to get what they want, either for themselves or their children. Integrity is pushed to the side but people who don’t want to be featured on the front page from a scandal will need to scrutinize their lack of integrity and moral codes to a far greater degree than they have in the past. Leaders, entrepreneurs, and business owners must accept that they are held to a higher standard of integrity than others.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  Maybe one of the reasons we don’t think about integrity is because it’s the opposite of self-interest. We’ve devolved into a “me” culture that promotes self above others. While that might be acceptable in small doses, it can have a toxic affect when it bleeds over into our behavior in business and life. We need to be  mentally tough  to hold ourselves to a higher moral standard. The best way to detect lack of integrity in others is to listen to what they say and watch what they do. Beware of the following:1. They Do The Right Thing- When They’ve Got An AudienceIntegrity is usually defined as doing the right thing when no one is watching. A person who lacks integrity will make decisions based on how it will make them look rather than how it will benefit others. They look at their actions as a performance to be rated for approval rather than a step toward doing the right thing for the community.Watch out because these people tend to yearn for the spotlight and will do whatever it takes to get there- even if it means doing the right thing, but only in front of an audience. Pay attention to how they make decisions when no one watches over them. Observe how they treat people who are lower in rank or status.Tip On How To NOT Be The Person Who Lacks Integrity: In situations where you’re not sure whether or not you’ve lost your moral compass, ask yourself, “Did I do the right thing?” Take the time to really think through the answer. If there is a doubt, find another way.2. If It’s Legal, It’s EthicalFormer  Valeant CEO Michael Pearson  testified to a Senate committee hearing he regretted that he pursued acquisitions where the rationale for the deal rested on increased prices of the medicine. It wasn’t illegal, but the public didn’t like it. Valeant stock took a nose dive and the company had to change their name to shed the scandal. The law is enforced by the state or federal government with penalties for violations but ethics is far broader than the law. Ethics and integrity imply good conduct as dete rmined by the values and customs of society. Our moral codes of behavior inform us when we’ve crossed the line- lying, betrayal, nepotism. These behavior are wrong, but they are not illegal.Watch for these behaviors: People who lie, break promises, make decisions based on greed, or cheat on their spouses have not broken the law, but they are unethical.Tip On How To NOT Be The Person Who Lacks Integrity: Integrity is self-motivated and based on your values. Take the time to think about the values that drive your behavior. Are they something you’re proud of? Would you want them printed in your obituary?3. They Don’t Care About Little White LiesA lack of integrity usually starts small and rolls down a slippery slope from there. Very few people wake up one morning and say, “I’ve decided I’m going to do something unethical.” Instead, it’s shortcuts, laziness, carelessness, and greed that triggers the behavior. Small concessions that, at first, don’t seem like a big deal especially if they can land a big sale, favorable performance appraisal, or a corner office.A recent  study by the Harvard Business Review  found that people who lack integrity are more likely to rationalize their conduct if it isn’t presented as an abrupt change. Researchers found that if they could get people to cheat a little the first time, they’d be willing to cheat a bit more the second time, and finally cheat “big” the third time.Anytime you hear someone say, “It’s just a little white lie,” give them a wide berth. It’s the thinking of a poor leader who’s philosophy incorporates excuses and a tendency to blame others for their mistakes.“The safest road to Hell is the gradual one- the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.”- C. S. Lewis.Tip On How To NOT Be The Person Who Lacks Integrity: Be accountable to others who will nudge you in the right direction. Help each other acknowledge and address your p roblems  before  it spills into unethical or greedy behavior that can get out of control. Even small reminders and nudges can deter undesirable behavior.4. They Think Their Behavior Doesn’t Hurt AnyoneOperation Varsity Blues  sickened everyone and has placed a spotlight on how some people with wealth justify their self-interest, even at the expense of others.  Research  shows that people will go to great lengths to rationalize their lack of integrity and maintain their higher status. In the case of cheating for their children, parents morally disengaged because they wanted successful kids to reflect well on themselves.Their behavior hurt others because their children were placed ahead of those who worked hard to get good grades and didn’t have rich parents to buy their way into an Ivy League school. People who lie, cheat, and bribe hurt everyone around them and they are either stupid or narcissistic if they don’t realize it.Today’s world is so focused on individualism that i t’s hard to find someone who focuses on ways to help others. People who put the best interests of others before their own have integrity. They don’t expect loads of praise or recognition for their actions.Interesting research  shows that people are more likely to justify cheating if they can share the benefits with others.  Elizabeth Holmes of Theranos  is a great example of how a person will find reasons to justify why they cheat and misrepresent the facts- in her case, to change the world.“There are no moral shortcuts in the game of business or life. There are, basically, three kinds of people, the unsuccessful, the temporarily successful, and those who become and remain successful. The difference is character.”- Jon HuntsmanTip On How To NOT Be The Person Who Lacks Integrity: Make note of how many times you say (or think) something like “Others do the same thing,” or “I know people who do lots of worse things.” It’s an attempt to minimize the consequences of you r actions or words.5. Their Definition Of Honesty Is FluidWhen you lie to Congress, it’s a crime. When Congress lies to you, it’s politics. In much the same way, those who lack integrity have a fluid relationship with the truth. It becomes flexible and dependent upon the circumstances and when it benefits them.If an FBI agent displays a lack of integrity, they are fired. Lack of candor will send an agent to the unemployment line faster than any other transgression. Internally, FBI stands for Fidelity, Bravery, and Integrity. The reason the FBI places so much emphasis on candor is because agents must have the guts and integrity to uphold federal laws. Unfortunately the FBI’s reputation has been tarnished by a few renegade agents at the top who made decisions on what they considered to be right or wrong and who should become president or not. They did not act with integrity and have been fired or removed from the ranks.Tip On How To NOT Be The Person Who Lacks Integrity: Integrit y means you need to tell the truth, even if it’s ugly. Once you start to delude others, you’ve also deluded yourself. People with integrity make promises, keep their word, and don’t change the truth to justify their behavior.6. Do As I Say, Not As I doResearch  shows there a tremendous gap between our actual behavior and the way we see ourselves. We have a strong desire to maintain a positive moral self-image and will make excuses or find ways to justify our behavior. For example, we: claim all the credit on a project, engage in a conflict of interest, and show favoritism- without an awareness of our behavior. When people lead with a “do as I say, not as I do” manner, expect others to resent the double standard. Cognitive dissonance occurs when an admired role model behaves in a manner that is distasteful to those around them. Even in what might be considered a small white lie, their lack of integrity signals hypocrisy and, in time, will damage their reputation.Tip On How T o NOT Be The Person Who Lacks Integrity: In today’s world, leaders are distrusted until they’re proven trustworthy. The onus is on you to be vigilant about what you say and what you do. Others will watch and take their cues from your behavior. Hiring for Fit to Match Your Corporate Culture

Hiring for Fit to Match Your Corporate Culture Hiring for Fit to Match Your Corporate Culture Your top job candidate meets all of the qualifications you’ve listed in the job posting, and then some. But are you also hiring for fit to match your corporate culture? That question is as important as any you might have asked to gauge skills, aptitude and experience. And it’s going to be one of the most difficult to answer. More than six in 10 human resources managers surveyed by our company said they had misjudged a candidate’s fit with their company’s work environment. In the same survey, two-thirds said their company had lost an employee because he or she was not suited for the work environment. Turnover is expensive and something firms want to avoid. The wrong person in the wrong job can also contribute to a decline in staff morale, collaboration and productivity. Whether the new hire is a toxic employee or simply a poor match for the position and team, the cost of not hiring for fit can be surprisingly high. No part of the hiring process should be left to chance. You can take steps to ensure your preferred candidate and your organization’s corporate culture are an ideal match. Here are our recommendations for hiring for fit: Hiring for fit through your job description Begin by describing your corporate culture in the job description. Why? Self-selection is an effective means for thinning the applicant pool. The more complete your job description, the more likely you’ll spend valuable time assessing not only the more highly qualified candidates, but also those who believe they would be happy - and successful - in your workplace environment. Happy workers are more engaged, loyal and invested in the work they do. They perform at a higher level - and that's good for your bottom line. We can help you find the right candidate for your open role: REQUEST TALENT Gen Z details. If you think sharing your organization’s mission and values is little more than pro forma, think again. For the newest population segment to join the workforce, Generation Z, this kind of detail can be critical information. “Making a difference or having a positive impact on society,” was one of Gen Z's top priorities when looking for a job, according to a Robert Half survey. If your organization has a formal corporate social responsibility (CSR) policy, consider giving a brief summary and link to it; otherwise, a short declaration about ethical standards and corporate citizenship will still reassure, maybe even excite, many job applicants. Perks and benefits. Perks and benefits also say a great deal about an organization’s corporate culture. Sure, most job seekers want to know about eligible time off and healthcare coverage as much as they want to know the position’s salary range. But think beyond the base package you’re offering. It’s fine to mention the ping-pong table in the conference room and the organization’s casual dress code. But what you say about work-life balance and professional development tells job seekers more about how the organization values its employees. Assure job seekers that corporate culture is not synonymous with a meat grinder, and that your organization appreciates - and rewards - employee dedication and hard work. Clarity of intention. Now, state your wants. Consider the qualities you most value in your top-performing employees. Different roles require different attributes, of course. But if yours is a high-performing, deadline-driven office, it's best to say you’re looking for someone who’s comfortable in a fast-paced work environment. If your organization handles highly sensitive information, emphasize discretion and confidentiality. Be honest about both the job’s requirements and the work environment. Candidates should know what’s required to be successful in the position, and how their performance would be evaluated. Again, give job seekers the opportunity to decide whether this is a corporate culture they would thrive in. Hiring for fit in an interview You’ve evaluated cover letters and resumes, and put aside any with obvious red flags. You’ve checked out the LinkedIn profiles of the most highly qualified candidates, and you’ve identified who you’d like to interview. Now, consider the interview questions you’ll ask to determine whether the applicant’s knowledge and skill level are as impressive as his work experience suggests, and how successful he would be in your corporate culture. Here are the different types of questions you may want to ask when hiring for fit: Open-ended questions. Ask open-ended and hypothetical questions during a job interview. The candidate’s answers can tell you how he handled challenging assignments in the past, and how he might resolve similar situations in your office. They can also offer insight into the candidate’s work ethic and whether it’s in sync with your corporate culture. Would the candidate handle an office emergency as a proactive, problem-solving employee, or is this someone who waits for direction? Do the candidate’s answers suggest he’s someone who’d achieve goals in a collaborative manner, or is he the type who’d break some china to get things done? Consider the qualifications required to succeed in the job as well as in the work environment when hiring for fit with your company's culture. Closed-ended questions. Closed-ended questions, too, can reveal a lot about whether the job candidate would be a good fit in your corporate culture. Assess a candidate’s tact and diplomacy when you ask why she left her last job, or whether there’s anything her current employer could do to make her want to stay. A simple, straightforward question like, “What kind of work environment do you prefer working in?” can tell you whether the candidate would feel comfortable or stressed in your open, lively and very busy office. Even more direct: “What are your values?” will tell you whether the applicant’s principles align with those of your corporate culture. Nonverbal cues. When you interview the candidate, also pay attention to nonverbal cues. Did the candidate dress appropriately for the interview? Is he an active listener, or does he appear distracted or keep interrupting you? Does he avoid eye contact and shift uncomfortably when asked how his former coworkers would describe his work style? A word of caution here: You should assess the candidate’s demeanor as carefully as you do the answers to your questions. But reading body language is a difficult art, especially when meeting a complete stranger in a situation as stressful as a job interview. Do what you can to put the individual at ease, and take care not to dismiss nervousness as deal-breaking awkwardness. Always research salaries in your market for the position you’re staffing. You want to meet, if not beat, what competitors are offering. GET THE SALARY CALCULATOR References and team feedback No matter how impressed you are, always check a candidate’s references. This is your opportunity to gather testimony that will confirm your good impressions and settle any lingering doubts when hiring for fit. It’s also your opportunity to determine whether the candidate would be successful in your work environment. But as with every other step in the hiring process, be prepared when checking references. Here are some tips: Dig deeper. Questions about the candidate’s strengths and weaknesses, collegiality and job attendance are important, but go beyond the “what.” When asking about notable accomplishments, ask how the candidate exceeded objectives and expectations, and imagine how similar situations might play out in your organization. If you’re speaking with a former employer, be mindful that you might not share the same values and qualities, much less the same corporate culture, that the candidate’s reference highlights. Be prepared to dig a little to get the answers you need. Employee feedback. If you have the time, seek feedback from the people who know your corporate culture best: Your team. Invite your top job candidate to lunch with the staff members she’d work with most closely. Afterward, ask the candidate and your employees separately how they would imagine working with one another, and whether the job and applicant seem like a good fit. Don’t be surprised if the candidate comes back with questions of her own. An informal meeting with staff would give plenty of clues about your organization’s corporate culture, from talk about workflow to management-staff relations. That can be a positive. There shouldn’t be any doubt with either of you that this is going to be an ideal match. Tags

How Flat Characters Are Used in Fiction

How Flat Characters Are Used in Fiction How Flat Characters Are Used in Fiction Flat characters- minor figures that play a supporting role in the story- are used to move the plot along, providing subtle exposition. Such characters do not undergo substantial change or growth in the course of a story. They are also known as two-dimensional characters or static characters. While main characters need to be believable to the reader, with a full range of personality traits and personal issues revealed, flat characters have a much narrower purpose and arent developed to the same extent as a storys protagonist. Examples of Flat Characters Good examples of flat characters are Crabbe and Goyle in the Harry Potter series. Telling their backstory, exploring their motivations, and having them change over time would make it almost impossible to follow the story arc. Rather than attempting to flesh out these characters, author J.K. Rowling makes them two-dimensional, or flat. Crabbe and Goyle are unintelligent, sycophantic followers- necessary to the plot, but otherwise unimportant. A more classic example is the character of Mr. Collins in Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice. He serves a vital role in the story for a character who is almost stereotypical in his pomposity, egocentricity, and class consciousness. Mr. Collins is at the center of a plot point through which protagonists Elizabeth and Darcy get together, providing a necessary comic element. But his character stays essentially unchanged; in fact, his lack of responsiveness is part of what makes him funny. Creating Flat Characters Creating flat characters is relatively easy; the writer needs to develop them only to the extent that the reader understands that characters relationship to the main characters. Whatever interaction that minor character has with the main character needs to be believable, either moving the protagonist toward a goal or setting him back. These figures in your writing are usually born of a single emotion. A flat character who is fearful might encourage the protagonist to be brave. One who is hedonistic might make the main character indulge where she shouldnt. These people serve a purpose in your story, and when the main characters have many different emotions and arcs, these characters are always stable. Uses in Different Types of Fiction   Flat characters are a staple of genres that require particular personality types, like romance or young adult fiction. Typically, the less literary the novel, the less you need to disguise such characters. Some examples: Few readers want to see reliably evil characters grow a conscience or feel guilt as a result of their actions. Flat characters are used extensively as henchmen who, unless they are one of the key players, almost never change. This makes them easier to understand and gives the reader a more comfortable sense of catharsis when they are subsequently dispatched, as often happens in graphic novels, adventure tales, and westerns.Readers of series like Twilight choose the next book in the series because they want to revisit the characters they know and love. Authors of such series must be careful to avoid changing their characters too radically and undermining their popularity. Stock characters, such as the wise adviser in the Quest fantasies, are intended only to further the plot by providing critically important information to the protagonist. Flat characters in the fantasy genre are appropriately called quest-givers. Should such a character change, that persons role in the story would come into question.

Managing Up - How to Manage Up - The Muse

Managing Up - How to Manage Up - The Muse Managing Up - How to Manage Up If you didn’t already know, the most significant factor impacting your job satisfaction is your relationship with your direct manager. Not surprisingly, clients often bring me stories about the difficulty of working with their bosses. It’s not always that these supervisors are bullies or tyrants; it’s simply that many employees don’t prioritize building a good relationship with their manager. The value of a good relationship is that it gives you a solid foundation when stressful times arise. Without one, you don’t have the open communication and sense of trust needed to resolve issues between you quickly. If they go unaddressed, these are issues over which you could grow fatigued and frustrated- and eventually, quit. Instead, you should have a strategic plan to “manage up” and figure out how to work with your manager more effectively. No matter how good or bad your manager may be, it’s vital- and, honestly, it’s your job- to make this relationship work. Why leave the quality of that relationship solely in your manager’s hands? Here’s what you can do to take charge and start managing up. 1. Embrace the Mission Your job is to support your boss’ success. That’s what you were hired to do. Managers don’t want people on their team who drag them down. They look for people to make them look like rock stars. Understand and accept this as your mission. 2. Develop a Positive Relationship If you think about it, you spend more time with your manager than with nearly any other person in your life. Yet so many people leave the nurturing and tending of this relationship to chance- or neglect it completely. Instead, intentionally get to know your manager as a person. I’m not saying you need to plan a camping trip or become best buds. But get a sense for who he or she is as a person. Where did she come from? How did she get where she is now? What are the lessons she learned along the way? Simple questions that help you to get to know one another can go a long way toward helping you understand your manager’s goals, perspective, and behavior- and respond accordingly. 3. Understand His or Her Goals All employees should know their direct manager’s goals, objectives, and desired outcomes. If you aren’t clear on those things, now’s the time to set up a one-on-one meeting to fix that. Why? Because everything you do is directly tied to that. By understanding his or her goals, you’ll be able to see how your work ties into the group’s success. (Plus, by seeing how you’re part of something bigger than your day-to-day responsibilities, you’ll up your satisfaction factor at work, too.) 4. Anticipate His or Her Needs Once you understand your boss’ goals, you’ll be better equipped to anticipate his or her needs. For example, if you know that your manager’s goal is to sign contracts with six new clients over the next month, notice when there are high-priority prospect meetings on his calendar and ask what he needs from you to be prepared. By asking for what your manager needs before he thinks to ask you for it, you’ll make a welcome contribution- without looking like you’re sucking up. 5. Never Let Him or Her Get Blindsided You know bad news is coming. There’s a miserable customer or an unhappy business partner poised to escalate over your head. That means your boss is going to get the call. There’s only one thing to do: Let your manager know before that call comes in. There’s nothing more annoying to a manager than being caught off guard and knowing nothing about the situation at hand. When you know that call is coming, get your boss the details of the situation and the corrective action that’s already in play (because you’ve already taken care of that, right?) so he or she is prepared and confident when that phone rings. 6. Do Your Job Well One of the best ways you can manage up is to manage you. Stephen Covey of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People fame said, “Effective people do two things: They strive to do excellent work, and they prioritize.” So, do both. When you do your job well, you give your manager something to brag about in staff meetings. It’s professional capital and a point of pride for him or her. What better way is there to manage up? 7. Tell Him or Her How to Best Use Your Talents Research shows that great managers uncover what’s unique about each person on the team- and then exploit the heck out of it. In order for your boss to do that, you need to tell him or her what your talents are and how you can use those powers for good in the organization and to serve his or her success. What are your strengths? What does your Myers-Briggs or DISC typology say about you? How do you deal with pressure, conflict, deadlines, and time management? What assets do you bring to the table- and how do they complement your manager’s strengths? Once you have a firm grasp on these things, have a conversation about how best to leverage what you bring to the organization. Managing up is a process of combining the best of both of you to create success for everyone. 8. Honor Your Boss’ Time You may be on the same team and pulling for the same results, but that doesn’t mean your boss’ time is yours for your taking. Learn the most opportune times to collaborate with your boss- when he or she is going to be most focused on what you need- and plan your meetings for those times. Honor your manager’s time in other ways, too. Keep commitments for meetings and phone calls. Begin them promptly and end on time. Prepare and send an agenda ahead of time so your boss knows what points you’ll be covering and you don’t get off track. Expect to lead the discussion, capture decisions, and follow up accordingly. You’ll show your boss that you value and appreciate his or her time. 9. Align Your Needs With His or Her Goals Long ago I heard someone say, “If you’re going to ask somebody to do something, tell them why it’s good for them.” Words could not be truer when it comes to asking something of your manager. Want to work on that new marketing project? Need her eyes on a presentation you’re working on? Want an introduction to a connection of hers? It’s far easier for her to say “yes” when you connect those actions to her professional goals. Tell her how the project will help you become a liaison for her team, how your presentation will impact the team’s success, or how that introduction will boost her reputation as a manager and mentor. 10. Under-Promise and Over-Deliver This almost goes without saying. If your manager needs to keep checking in and worries about you delivering on time, you’re not doing it right. Keep your commitments. Meet deadlines ahead of time. Keep your boss in the loop about the progress you’ve made before she asks. These devilishly simple strategies make you look like a rock star- and an expert in managing up. Don’t make the mistake- one that so many people make- of believing your manager is simply a work troll to be tolerated (or worse). Look around and see what you can do to manage up effectively. You’ll find more satisfaction and learn far more in the process. Photo of hands courtesy of Shutterstock.

Interview Questions About Trends in Your Profession

Interview Questions About Trends in Your Profession Interview Questions About Trends in Your Profession Most employers are looking to hire employees who are forward thinking and in tune with trends impacting their profession. With insight into trends and whats expected in your industry, you can help propel a company beyond the status quo. Being engaged with the industry shows you care about it - its an indicator that youre passionate about work, and will go beyond the bare minimum as an employee.   Interviewers and recruiters are very likely to expect you to know about trending topics in your profession and/or career field. How to Answer Interview Questions About Trends in Your Profession You should be able to show the interviewer that you are on top of what’s new and noteworthy. To do that, youll need to regularly spend time researching the latest trends in your field to make sure you acquire the knowledge and skills to keep pace with change. When you are in  job search  mode, it is especially important to have a handle on trends and to be prepared to comfortably discuss your views about the factors influencing the evolution of your profession. Even if you are not explicitly asked about trends, your insight into the industry can be helpful throughout your interview. It can inform your responses to other interview questions.   How Can You Keep Up with Trends? Wondering how to stay current on the news and trends within your industry? Youve got lots of options. Here are a few ideas:   Attend events: Conferences tend to book thought leaders and big names within industries to give keynote addresses. Pay attention to what these speakers discuss - and also listen for mentions of any Twitter accounts, websites, or other resources or places for information that they mention. You can also attend webinars, workshops, meet-ups, and seminars to keep current on trends.  Follow prominent figures on social media: Thanks to the internet, you can follow along with the readings lists and discussions of the leaders and big thinkers within your field. In fact, you can even (politely) engage with them on social media, and become a part of the conversation.   Subscribe to newsletters: Along with social media, seek out industry newsletters, from the formal ones written by major groups to the chatty ones from people who are passionate about the industry. Podcasts can also be a rich source of information, as can industry trade publications.    Seek out relevant groups on LinkedIn, Facebook, and other platforms: Groups on LinkedIn and Facebook are full of conversations, shared ideas, and links to interesting articles that can help you sense the trends within your field.   Set up Google alerts: You can create alerts around key industry terms, ongoing news stories, or buzzwords. That way, you will always be up-to-date on the latest information.     During interviews, as well as mentioning trends, you can share where you learned about them. That will show that youre interested and involved in the industry, and actively seeking to stay current.   Examples of the Best Answers Once youre actively following and reading thought leaders and stars in your field, as well as keeping up to date through newsletters, podcasts, and other sources of information, its easier to talk about trends.   Here are some potential ways to respond if you are asked about the latest trends in your industry, where you think the industry is headed, how you keep up with industry trends, or other similar questions.   I enjoy conversing with fellow professionals and the buzz recently has focused on the importance of maintaining adequate loan reserves at this point in the economic cycle.   I follow John Brown, Jane Smith and Bob Meyers on Twitter and they all have touted the urgency of reducing expenses by outsourcing programming to lower cost countries. I recently read an article in the Journal of Marketing underscoring the importance of tapping the social media to more effectively target market segments. There were three or four sessions devoted to  Search Engine Marketing  strategies at this years annual conference for the Web Marketing Association, I was able to attend two workshops and learned... I find our industry so fascinating. Without even trying, Ive followed and engaged with some of the big thought leaders in our field, such as Sarah Jane, Joe Smith, and so on. As well as my early-morning Twitter scrolling, I subscribe to newsletters from mainstream and industry publications. Plus, I try to attend at least one big conference a year. I find the conversations with peers can be as valuable as the keynote speakers and workshops at these events.

10 common things bosses say and what they really mean

10 common things bosses say and what they really mean 10 common things bosses say and what they really mean It goes without saying that it’s not always easy to be a boss. To avoid awkward situations, managers often resort to making empty promises or using some very over-used phrases. The good news is, we’ve found the 10 most common things they say, and we’re here to tell you what they really mean.“It’s just not possible to give you a raise right now”In most cases this comes with a classic excuse. One version of this is “I would really like to give you a raise, but…” So if you hear either one of these, make sure to ask for a concrete reason. Is your company in difficult times right now? Or is your manager trying to get your raise approved? This puts your boss into a position of having to explain properly, and this will likely give you a second chance.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  â€œWe’ve always done it like that”Are you always coming up with suggestions only for your boss to shut them down without discussion? This expression is normally used by managers in an attempt to keep everything just the way it is. If you want to bring some fresh air into your company, your manager should support you, or at the very least explain why your suggestion wasn’t taken seriously. The best way to deal with this is to take it in your stride and show your management team that you don’t give up easily.“In the future we want to be more results-oriented and improve performance”This can be translated as â€" you can expect to work a lot from now on, but you don’t expected to be paid anymore for it. All of the innovative project will take a backseat, creative coffee breaks will be taken away and surprise, surprise â€" the numbers still won’t add up at the end. Maybe that’s an exaggeration, but often management uses this, and other excuses, to say that they want more out of their employees, and that certain goals can only be achieved by, you gu essed it, yet more hours of work.“Overtime is not the norm here”The small disclaimer being â€" unless you want a promotion. Why else do we continue to put in those hours of work well after our normal working day has ended? Well, unfortunately, the number of overtime hours you do is still seen as an indicator of your performance and motivation for some management teams. But, we say that you should say no to overtime and we’ve even made a  list of the best ways to say no and just relax instead, check it out.“At the moment, you can be happy that you even have a job”Quite honestly, no manager should ever let this sentence come out of their mouth. You didn’t get this job because of some accident, you got it because you’re good at what you do and your boss should appreciate that! The sole purpose for this line is to strike fear into you and your colleagues, so make sure to show that you’re not intimidated.“Stick at it, I have faith in your abilities”Are you stuck in a vicious cycle of endless deadlines one after the other and a to-do list that never seems to end? In these situations you can be sure that your managers will try to motivate you and your colleagues with phrases like this to encourage you to keep going. That’s why they also like to say “I know the workload is a lot right now, but …” And in reality this really means, “I don’t care how you do it. The main thing is that it all gets done.” “Thanks for your input, I’ll keep your suggestion in mind” This doesn’t sound that bad, right? But in reality, what this really means is: Thank you for your suggestion, but we absolutely will not consider it. In this situation, it makes sense to follow up with your manager and ask them what they have against implementing your idea? If they can’t be convinced then ask yourself who you need to talk to instead? If you’re really behind your idea, stick with it and let everyone know. “We have to outsource certain processes for strategic reasons.” Of course, it goes without saying that there can’t always be experts for everything in house. But this phrase could also mean that certain tasks are being outsourced to cut jobs in your company. Just make sure to ask about the situation before you start panicking. Ask your managers which tasks are being outsourced and why? If there’s nothing to worry about, your boss will be happy to answer your questions. “Just go as far as possible with it.” We all know what it’s like to get inundated with deadlines. But, when your manager says this whilst setting you a new task, it’s usually for a very specific reason. Whilst at first it might seem to be a way to minimize pressure, it usually does the opposite. Our managers should be motivating us to “do our best work” and this phrase just seems to say “just do something.” We’d be wary of it, especially as it’s hard to know what’s expected of you, so ask for binding deadlines and work towards those instead. “You should see this as an opportunity.” When you hear this phrase, there is usually a big change right around the corner. And because change is never easy, this phrase almost sounds alright. But don’t be taken in by empty statements. Instead, make sure to discuss what’s going on with your manager, ask them what changes can you expect to see in the future and how these will affect you and your colleagues. And who knows, maybe there will be a big opportunity for you soon. These bullshit phrases have one thing in common â€" they don’t sound that bad at first because they sound quite positive. But beware, looks can deceive. Our tip is to not shy away from those difficult conversations, make sure to ask your manager about everything you’re concerned about. After all, every good employer should be able to communicate openly and transparently. Pinocchio and the Pencil Pushers

Pinocchio and the Pencil Pushers Pinocchio and the Pencil Pushers PER DAY!! Surprisingly enough, managers aren’t lying to their employees, but to their supervisors. Which means, if you manage a team, you might be on the receiving end of these lies. It’s even more disappointing that employees often see their managers as having poor moral ethics- an astonishing 80.1 percent. This is not the kind of leadership we want to have. Even when it is a small, seemingly insignificant lie, lying is toxic in the workplace. But how to prevent it, or perhaps just offset the damage? Here are four quick ideas to help you keep an office worthy of Honest Abe: Don’t leave room for lies Instead of telling an employee how great they are and how valued their work is with superfluous words, use metrics.  Set measurable objectives to show employees what their work is truly worth. This saves managers from the temptation of using phrases that don’t always match the employee. Most employees don’t fit the “you’re one of our best employees,” “good job,” or “here’s your raise” category. Keep in mind that employees want to help achieve company objectives, but many dont know what those are. Be as transparent as possible and close every feedback loop. Recognize that omission is part of the problem Deception in the office goes beyond blatant lies. Say Joe processed an insurance claim. He accidentally mixed up some numbers, was aware of the mistake, but didn’t say anything. If he doesn’t get caught, what does it matter?  Lying by omission  perpetuates the habit. It doesn’t seem like a true lie, however. Allowing another person to come to the wrong conclusion without correction is just as big of a problem as blatantly lying. Again, transparency in reporting can solve this issue, at least in part. Look to 360 reviews and dont forget to positively motivate those who arent hiding part of the story. Pick your battles While roughly 1 out of 3 of all  employees tell one white lie at least once per day, that doesn’t make the habit any less of a problem. However, management should learn that a one-size-fits-all strategy may simply alienate workers. Instead, focus on lies that directly affect performance or other members of the team. Even when confrontation is difficult, it is important to point out unacceptable behavior, as allowing one person to lie continuously can propagate the behavior. Implementing an intranet with few closed groups can help this behavior. Another idea? Make team goals (and fulfillment) available across the enterprise to avoid confusion. Build in Accountability It is easy to lie about a project or a deadline when no one is accountable. If no one is responsible for it, who will speak up for it? Setting a good accountability policy will place a standard on management and employees alike. It will ensure everyone holds to the same policies. It is a team effort to hold each other accountable for corporate actions. Encourage your employees to keep accountable  for their own work by: Not covering up mistakes â€" Own up to mistakes. If mistakes happened, they will not stay hidden in the long run. Encourage this by not overreacting when someone makes an honest mistake. Instead, use it as a teachable moment. Not blaming others â€" Again,  own up to mistakes.  Don’t put them on someone else. This not only creates for a hostile work environment, it makes others distrustful. Leaders can ensure this doesnt happen by asking employees to show their work, this generally reveals the guilty party. Do more than the minimum â€" Some employees barely meet requirements. Get all team members on board with consistent process improvement. Some will scoff, others will rise to the challenge, more will want to at least keep up with the higher bar set. Meet expectations â€" It’s an adult environment. The workplace is no longer about “good try,” or “you’ll get ‘em next time” comments. Employees either meet expectations or they don’t. While its important to praise employees for a job well done (gratitude is especially effective) an effective leader will not sugarcoat a poorly executed plan. Pinpointing Pinocchio What needs to happen when someone deliberately lies in the workplace? If it is a habitual tendency, management needs to address the issue. Lying in the workplace can greatly depreciate the environment for employees and the quality of work. The bigger the lie, the bigger the problem; they all need attention. There are  three options in dealing with a liar. An employee can confront the liar, report them, or ignore the lies. The latter option is toxic for the workplace.
